Jon Hartley Fox was born in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up listening to King Records. A lifelong record collector and semi-musician, he worked in radio for a decade, worked at several independent record companies and has written extensively about music and the arts since the late 1970s.

Fox is a frequent pre-performance lecturer for the Mondavi Center for the Arts at UC Davis and has twice won awards for his album liner notes from the International Bluegrass Music Association. He has previously contributed to three books, including the Oxford Encyclopedia of Country Music.

He lives in California with his wife.
