Books by the Banks Code of Conduct

Books by the Banks (BBTB) has an active governing body that is responsible for setting the mission and strategic direction of the organization and oversight of the finances, operations, and policies of the organization. One of BBTB’s core values is the dignity, diversity, and inclusion of everyone with whom we interact. All participants at BBTB events are required to adhere to BBTB’s code of conduct, as described below. This includes booksellers, exhibitors, speakers/presenters, guests, sponsors, volunteers, and all affiliated attendees.

This code of conduct expressly recognizes harassment, assault, aggression, and intimidation are unacceptable. These behaviors can be related to, but are not limited to, verbal or written comments about: race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin or ancestry, medical conditions, age, body size, sexual orientation, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or related situations), gender identity or presentation, military service, or differing physical or mental abilities. Harassment includes any behavior that a reasonable person would find intimidating, hostile or offensive, such as lewd, overtly sexual disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Inappropriate behavior may take many forms such as:

  • Slurs

  • Jokes

  • Derogatory statements

  • Foul or obscene language

  • Offensive clothing

  • Leering

  • Stalking

  • Staring

  • Gestures

  • Pictures

  • Drawings or cartoons

  • Violating personal space by impeding or blocking another person’s movement or otherwise physically

    interfering with them

  • Harassing photography or recordings

  • Unwanted or offensive letters or poems

  • Offensive email, voicemail messages or social media postings

  • Unwanted or inappropriate touching

  • Unwanted or inappropriate advances

  • Physical and/or sexual assault

  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events

  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

BBTB takes any form of harassment very seriously. Accordingly, participants who engage in inappropriate behavior, in the judgment and discretion of BBTB, may be asked to stop; may be expelled from a BBTB event; and may be prevented from attending future BBTB events. BBTB will accept no liability for other expenses incurred by expelled attendees.

If you are being harassed or observe someone else being harassed, please notify BBTB event organizers or one of the blue- shirted volunteers immediately.
